TEAM HUMANITY PROGRAMS
A HISTORY, 2014-2024

1.) T-Shirts for Social Change
The project "T-Shirts for Social Change" involved teams of high school students from Monessen, Brownsville, and Laurel Highlands school districts. Each team spent 12-15 hours at Verticals learning the concepts of design, messaging, and branding, culminating in a T-shirt with a message that the teens felt was relevant to their respective schools and communities. The teams had access to advanced software, video recording equipment, screen print, heat press and embroidery machines, and other state-of-the-art equipment. Teams were judged on who best communicated a complete message and executed in three areas: Research and Development (design, typography and graphic on the product); Production (use of embroidery, screen print or heat press) and Marketing and Sales (the video and presentation). Celebrity judges from the community evaluated each project in terms of overall project as well each of the individual components. A presentation was held for the families and friends of the participants.

2,) Exploring Emerging Technologies
Short courses (6-8 sessions) for Elementary, Middle and High School Students were held in Robotics, Drone Videography, NFT’s, Intro to Finance and Legos Spike. The Intro to Finance Course included a Field Trip to Northwestern Mutual’s Pittsburgh Office. Brownsville Students also produced the first NFT by school students in Fayette County.

3.) Verticals Outdoor Learning Center
In our third year of planting and caring for a Community Garden on the site of the Mulligan Manor Senior Housing site, we added an organic garden across the street on the site of the First Christian Church of Brownsville. Student workers planted, tended and harvested both gardens. Produce was made available to seniors at Mulligan Manor and members of the community. Students learned about healthy foods, the difference between organic and regularly grown produce and the value of fresh foods in keeping fit and healthy. We had a pizza shop that bought organic basil from our garden.

4.) Team Humanity Summer Youth Employment
As in the previous 7 years, we hired a number of teens to work for TeamHumanity Sports at Verticals. They were able to participate in workshops as well as earn a wage. They learned business etiquette, responsibility, and what it takes to be entrepreneurs.

5.) Team Humanity Games
This year we held a “Back to School” Pop up Team Humanity Games at Grant Street Park in Uniontown and partnered with a colleague to take the games to Virginia Beach, Va. We have held this event for 6 straight years in and around Fayette County.

6.) Juneteenth Celebration
We co-hosted the first ever Juneteenth celebration in Brownsville. It was a weekend of activities that included writing workshops, art for kids, Birth and breastfeeding education, spoken word and soul food.

7.) Poetry Slams

10.) Art Workshop

11.) One Fayette Movement
Upon learning that Fayette County ranked 67 out of 67 on one survey dealing with life expectancy, education level and poverty rate and obesity. Students did some research to find out more about their county. They created a website (www.onefayette.com) with some factual statistical information in order to bring attention to the fact that we need to move up. They created a T-shirt with a Double Rainbow and the names of all Fayette County Communities and sold it to the public to inspire positive change.

12.) Mental Strength Sundays 4 Girls
Facilitator Jonna J worked with young teen girls to learn about emotional intelligence and boundaries among other topics.

13.) 1st Annual Fayette County Student Athlete Conference
Team Humanity held the first annual Fayette County Student Athlete Conference with seven keynote speakers discussing opportunities within the world of sports. Topics presented included sports marketing, sports and mental health, NIL, coaching, sports administration, sports nutrition and sports apparel.

14.) Launched “Check on Them” Mental Health Tour.
This “tour” addresses teens to prevent tragedies from occurring and let them know about the help available to them. We began the tour in Monessen with students who were feeling the pain of the loss of one peer by gunshot and another peer to the legal system. The website will launch in 2023 as well as more visits to schools across the state of Pennsylvania.
